Why Accessible Activities Matter

More Than a Jigsaw Puzzle. Confidence and Connection When They Matter Most

A favorite activity offers the pleasure of solving a problem and seeing something come together. When it becomes harder to see, handle, or follow, that satisfaction can become harder to reach.

Large puzzle pieces, clear picture guides, and adjustable support offer different ways to engage. Someone might build independently, match pieces over a template, or enjoy the scenery and conversation alongside you.

The goal is simple: make the activity fit the person. More chances to feel “I can do this,” and more time to enjoy being together—on good days and on the days that matter most.

How we differ from traditional jigsaw puzzles

Jigsaw Puzzles, Reimagined for Cognitive Accessibility

Typical Boxed Puzzles

  • Setup and sorting take time
  • Bulky box hard to store and carry around
  • Limited ways to adjust the challenge (Often one way)
  • Glossy or unclear reference image
  • Thin pieces can bend easily

Aegeliss 2-in-1 Puzzle Book

  • Setup in seconds - Open the book and begins
  • Slim, 1″ format
  • Multiple setups for different levels of difficulty
  • Built-in photos and guided templates with low glare
  • Sturdy blue-core pieces, easier to grasp

Designed with Montessori principles and cognitive accessibility

Maddy's story, A daughter caring for dad with dementia

The Smallest Moments Can End Up Meaning the Most

Ju from Aegeliss drove out to my dad’s memory care community and did a puzzle with him. At lunchtime, he looked up and said, “It’s lunchtime already? I didn’t even feel it.”

I’ve been using it with him ever since. The pieces are big enough for his hands, and my dad loves to use his hands. The colors are bright enough that he can find the pieces himself. He enjoys it. He laughs. It gives him purpose.

As caregivers, we’re constantly finding ways to keep our loved ones connected, involved, and feeling seen. And sometimes, it’s the smallest moments that end up meaning the most.

What Families and Care Professionals Are Sharing

Hear how Aegeliss jigsaw puzzles open the door to shared conversation, joy and moments that make caring feel a little lighter

For the first time in a while, we were all having fun

Zahydie

Niece Caring for Uncle with Lewy Body Dementia

As my uncle’s Lewy body dementia progressed, I became the person he directed his anger and frustration toward. My once-loving uncle became someone I had to stop visiting as often. On my next visit, I walked in with Aegeliss puzzles. We followed the discussion guide and started the Grand Teton puzzle. The flowers reminded him of Puerto Rico, and the snow-covered mountains reminded him of New York. Then his engineer brain kicked in. He insisted on doing it himself, without the easel or picture templates. So, we followed his lead. For the first time in a while, he was having fun. We were all having fun. He completed the 12-piece puzzle in about 40 minutes. When he finished, he was happy and told us his brain had “worked out quite a bit.” That told me everything I needed to know.

Residents often stop by and start working on it

Kelly Chiat

Active Living Director, Memory Care

It was amazing to watch how engaged and excited they became while working together. I really appreciate the thought and intention behind the puzzle and how it supports connection across different ability levels. We left it on display in the club room, and residents often stop by, pick it up, and start working on it independently or with others. Two thumbs up!

My grandma was immediately engaged

Dannielle Vigil

Granddaughter caring for grandma with Lewy Body Dementia

My grandma was immediately engaged and said the puzzle pieces were just her size. Even after I left her house, my grandpa let me know she had started doing the puzzle on her own. It’s hard to come across such sturdy, good-quality products, and I think you got it spot-on with the puzzle book. Not only is it a great size, but it also keeps everything organized in one book.

Today is an extraordinary day!

Resident in Memory Care

Participant, Aegeliss "Puzzle Together, Joy Together" summer event

Today is an extraordinary day! When can I come back?

Very helpful for non-verbal and busy residents

Tisha Parsley

Active Living Director, Cedar Creek Memory Care

One of my residents is usually very fidgety and wants to stand up and move around. I gave her the puzzles, and she sat for about 30–35 minutes working on one. It really helped her relax and calm down. She told me she’d been to both places and shared all about her visits. These puzzles have been very helpful for our busy residents and a few of our nonverbal residents.

Our residents love it!

Emily Campbell

Activity Director, Heritage of Hudson

Our residents love it! One resident worked on the puzzles for about 45 minutes—much longer than her usual 10–15 minutes. The residents really liked the images, too. We have a similar puzzle, but its pieces were flimsier and broke fairly quickly, so I liked that the cardboard pieces in this puzzle were sturdier. The number of pieces was a good fit too.

She was committed to completing it

Tamara Steffen

Yakima Program Leader, Old Friends Club

One of our members was immediately drawn to the puzzle and quickly became engaged. She could handle the pieces easily and was committed to completing it, finishing without a pause in about 15 minutes. The images were beautiful, and the cuts were placed perfectly for finding and matching pieces by image and color.

Residents enjoy the sense of accomplishment

Sade Estemonu

Community Relations Director, The Bellingham at Orchard by Cogir

We’ve had a great experience using Aegeliss puzzles in our memory care community. The larger pieces are easy to handle, and residents enjoy the sense of accomplishment when completing a puzzle. It’s a wonderful design that encourages engagement and conversation.

The group loved the novelty

Erika Campbell

Geriatric Care Manager

The group loved the novelty as they explored the puzzle. We paired participants with different support needs so they could encourage each other. Everyone had a great time enjoying some friendly competition and working together.

Questions Before You Get Started?

Frequently Asked Questions About Aegeliss Large Piece Puzzles

Looking for new puzzle designs? You’re in good company—it’s one of our most popular requests! Join our newsletter to be the first one to know when they arrive.

What makes these large piece puzzles a good choice for seniors?

Aegeliss Breathtaking Mountains brings Grand Teton and Grand Canyon to the table—two spectacular national parks to explore from the comfort of home.

Each scene has 12 large, sturdy pieces, a matte finish to help reduce glare, and a built-in reference photograph. Optional picture templates let you adjust the visual guidance to suit the person’s vision, dexterity, and preferred challenge.

The experience goes beyond placing the last piece. Beautiful adult landscapes and a discussion guide filled with park history, fun facts, and conversation prompts offer plenty to discover together. Share a travel memory, imagine a future adventure, or simply enjoy the view—no hiking boots required.

Are these puzzles suitable for someone living with dementia?

Yes. Designed with Montessori principles and cognitive accessibility in mind, Aegeliss' large puzzle pieces, adjustable picture guidance, and adult imagery that respects the person’s interests and identity.

The picture templates let someone match pieces directly over the image, providing visual guidance with less reliance on memory alone. Adjust the support to suit the person’s abilities and comfort that day.

Whether they place a few pieces, complete a scene, or enjoy a conversation, there are many ways to participate and feel successful. For caregivers, it’s an easy starting point for time together—with less pressure to plan an activity or keep the conversation going.

During our visits to memory care communities, we’ve seen residents enjoy independent puzzling for 30 minutes to two hours. One resident told us afterward, “I feel so much better now.” Every person’s experience is different, but moments like these are why we created these puzzles.

Will a 12-piece puzzle be too easy for my parents or grandparents?

Think about what they enjoy today. Twelve pieces offer a manageable challenge for someone who prefers simpler puzzles or finds larger puzzles frustrating. Building without the picture template or board adds more challenge.

For an enthusiastic 1,000-piece puzzler, this set may be too easy but can be ideal for relaxed family time—enjoying the scenery and talking about past trips together. The best fit is something they want to do, with enough challenge to feel satisfying.

More pieces and new places are on the horizon! Join our newsletter for updates on future puzzles with different difficulty levels and image options.

How do I make the puzzle easier or more challenging?

One puzzle, many ways to play. Use the included materials to find a comfortable challenge:

  • Template inside the board: Match pieces over the picture template, with the board providing a clear boundary.
  • Template on the table: Match over the template without the board.
  • Board and reference photograph: Build within the board using the photograph as a guide.
  • Directly on the table: Build without the board or underlying template.

Start with a simpler setup and see how it feels. A little more guidance today, a little more challenge next time–all with the same puzzle book. Follow the person’s response and make room for those satisfying “I can do this!” moments.

Can these jigsaw puzzles be used in memory care or senior living?

Yes. These jigsaw puzzles for memory care and senior living work well for individual activities, small groups, and family visits. The picture templates let staff customize the setup to residents’ abilities without preparing a different activity. Finding a comfortable level of challenge can encourage sustained focus, relaxed enjoyment, and confidence—giving residents more opportunities to experience “I can do this.”

The invitation table tent invites spontaneous engagement, while the discussion guide offers an easy starting point for conversation. One person might place pieces while another enjoys the scenery or shares a story, offering different ways to find joy and connection. Residents with different abilities can also work together, each contributing in their own way—a rewarding experience for residents, families, and staff alike.

Activity directors have often told us, “Your puzzles are the most popular activities on the floor!”

Can I bring the puzzle book on visits?

Yes. Both puzzles come in one book, with an inner envelope for the templates, discussion guide, and invitation sign—keeping everything together for family visits, shared activities, or time away from home.

The closed book measures 14.25″ wide × 11.25″ high, and each puzzle area measures 12″ × 9″. Carry it in a backpack or walker bag that accommodates these dimensions.

For professional caregivers and companionship teams, it’s a ready-to-use activity to bring from visit to visit—making it easier to offer something enjoyable and connect with clients.

Why add the Adjustable Bamboo Stand to my puzzle book?

The Adjustable Bamboo Stand works as both a puzzle book holder and a versatile book display stand. Its simple interlocking design assembles in seconds without tools, supporting your open puzzle book at an adjustable viewing angle.

When you’re finished, use it as a tabletop easel to display your puzzle artwork or a favorite book. Crafted from bamboo, it keeps favorite activities comfortably within reach and beautifully on display.

The stand is sold separately or available with the puzzle book in a bundle.

Are the puzzles waterproof? How should I care for them?

The puzzle pieces are made from paper and cardboard and should be kept dry. Do not wash or immerse them in water. To clean the puzzle book’s cover, gently wipe it with a lightly damp cloth and mild soap, then dry it.

The separate stone-paper picture templates are water-resistant and tear-resistant. After each session, return the pieces to their boards and tuck the templates, guide, and invitation sign into the inner envelope—keeping everything together for next time.
